Hate, it has caused a lot of problems in the world, but has not solved one yet

This quote struck a chord with me, with everything that is going on in the world right now. Right now, thousands are dying in Iran, with protests going on against the government. Right now, there are thousands in protest in the US. There is a lot of hate right now, and it is difficult not to be swept up in the tide. There is also a group of monks doing a walk for peace. Jesus did that once, and they nailed him to a cross for his efforts.

That only made him a martyr. The killing of an evil person will just make them a martyr as well.

Sad, but true.

It looks like the only way out of this safely is using love. Peace to the monks on the walk of peace.

The Art of Zazen: Practices and Postures

Zazen, a form of seated meditation, is a cornerstone of Zen Buddhism, offering profound depth and tranquility. This practice isn’t just about physical posture; it’s a gateway to self-exploration and mindfulness. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the nuances of Zazen, from taking off your shoes to understanding the significance of hand positions.

Removing Your Shoes: A Gesture of Respect

In Zazen, removing your shoes before entering the meditation space is a symbolic act of leaving the external world and its distractions behind. This practice fosters a sense of humility and respect, essential qualities for meditation. It’s also a nod to cleanliness and purity, creating a sacred environment for your practice.

Sitting in Zazen: The Hows and Whys

The quintessence of Zazen is sitting in a posture that promotes alertness and relaxation. Here’s how to get into the Zazen posture:

  1. Choose Your Position: You can sit in the full lotus, half-lotus, Burmese, or seiza (kneeling) position. Select a pose that allows you to be steady and comfortable.
  2. Align Your Spine: Keep your back straight, allowing natural curves. This alignment supports deep breathing and alertness.
  3. Hands in the Cosmic Mudra: Rest your dominant hand palm-up on your lap, with the other hand on top, also palm-up. Lightly touch the tips of your thumbs together, forming an oval. This mudra symbolizes the universe’s wholeness and the interconnectedness of all things.

The Significance of Hand Positions (Mudras)

Hand positions, or mudras, are integral to Zazen. They’re not just physical gestures but symbolic expressions of your inner state:

  • Cosmic Mudra (Hokkaijoin): Represents the universe’s vastness and unity, encouraging a sense of oneness and harmony.
  • Resting the hands on the knees (Gassho): Signifies gratitude and respect, often used during prostrations or when greeting the meditation hall.

Embarking on the Meditation Journey

With the posture set, turn your attention inward:

  1. Gaze Downward: Softly focus your eyes on the ground, about three feet in front of you, to reduce distractions.
  2. Focus on Your Breath: Observe the natural flow of your breath. When your mind wanders, gently bring your focus back to your breathing.
  3. Embrace Silence: Allow thoughts and sensations to arise and pass without attachment, fostering a deep sense of inner peace.

Conclusion

Zazen is more than a meditation technique; it’s a pathway to discovering your true nature and cultivating a peaceful mind. By embracing the practices and postures of Zazen, you embark on a transformative journey, deepening your connection with the present moment and the world around you.

Embrace this ancient practice, and find tranquility and insight in the art of sitting quietly.

Don’t Take Things Personally

There is a huge amount of freedom that comes to you when you take nothing personally. - Don Miguel Ruiz
Don’t Take Things Personally

Don Miquel Ruiz is most well known for the book he wrote, “The Four Agreements”. I cannot remember if this quote was from this book or not but I have found him to be a great spiritual advisor.

If you are able to not take things personally you wouldn’t believe how much weight gets lifted off of your shoulders. Besides the thing that was said to you that you took personally may have not even been about you at all.

Instead of getting overwhelmed trying to not take everything personally take baby steps doing a little at a time until you grow strong enough where almost nothing bothers you at all.

Don’t Worry

One day you will look back and realize that you worried too much about things that don't really matter.
Don’t Worry

Don’t waste your life worrying. I know that is much easier said than done for most people.

To help you with this think of something in the past that you worried about and then think about it in the grand scheme of things. It didn’t really matter, did it?

If something happens to you that you can do something about then worrying makes no sense and if something happens that you cannot do anything about then worrying would not help you solve it, will it? What does that leave out? Nothing!

Ego vs Spirit

Ego says: "Once everything falls into place, I will find peace." Spirit says: "Find peace and everything will fall into place."
Ego vs Spirit

I like this quote a lot and am very guilty of “putting off” happiness until certain conditions are met. This kind of thinking sets up my life of never being happy.

If you are happy or at peace with yourself, you will find that the universe will provide you with events that will naturally fall into place.

Remember: There is no way to peace, peace is the way.

Expect Nothing and Appreciate Everything

Expect nothing and appreciate everything.
Expectations & Appreciation

With this meme, the author of the quote looks like they are trying to avoid disappointment in their lives.

It is dangerously close to the theory of expecting nothing and you will never be disappointed which is a horrible thing to believe because you will be setting yourself up for failure every time. If you put your mind to something not happening then the universe will provide that for you. I think I will delete this meme from my meditations.

Extending and Receiving Kindness

The more you extend kindness to yourself, the more it will become your automatic response to others. - Dr. Wayne Dyer
Kindness

Smiles are contagious and when you smile at someone they can’t help but smile back and if you scowl at someone they are likely to scowl back.

But in this quote instead of externally showing kindness, Wayne Dyer is saying that if you give yourself kindness then it becomes easier to show kindness to others.

If you are looking to improve how you react to others try reacting better to yourself.  Do you know the phrase you cannot love another until you love yourself? It has some similarities.

Eyes Useless When Mind is Blind

The eyes are useless when the mind is blind...
Sight

This is a nice little reminder showing me that some people even when shown the facts right in front of their faces that they still cannot see it if their mind is not open. It is like the play on words the book Wayne Dyer wrote, “You’ll See It When You Believe It: The Way to Your Personal Transformation” instead of you’ll believe it when you see it.

It also reminds me of the lyrics from the song “Casey Jones” from the Grateful Dead. “Trouble with you is. The trouble with me. Got two good eyes. But we still don’t see.”

Fix Problems by Thinking

"I do not fix problems. I fix my thinking. Then problems fix themselves." - Louise Hay
Solving Problems

Louise Hay if you didn’t know founded Hay House where you can get all of these great books, CDs, DVDs, etc. for spiritually-minded people.

This is a unique way of looking at things. Wayne Dyer also said something similar to this. It was, “When you change the way you look at things, the things that you look at will change.”

Same principle, same result. So the next time you have a problem with something change the way you look and think about it then you will discover that many of your problems will go away with little effort.

Tony Robbins also said something similar to this as well by instructing his listeners to ask yourself the right questions like, “How can I prevent this from happening again?” and “What is good about this situation?”. Ask these questions instead of questions like, “Why does this always happen to me?” If you ask questions like this your brain will come up with an answer and it will just get you into a worked up frenzy!
